Ways to support a person with depression

To help someone with depression, be supportive and non-judgmental through actively listening and showing empathy. . Showing you care without trying to fix their problems can be of great help.

Encourage the person to seek professional help, such as visiting their GP or seeing a psychologist.. Offering help to organise this support along with other daily tasks can be a practical way to help.

Be patient and avoid giving unsolicited advice that might minimise their feelings. Maintain regular check-ins and invite them to social activities without applying pressure.

We also recommend that people educate themselves about depression, tobetter understand it and provide more effective support.

The best way to help is to respect boundaries, be consistent, reliable, encourage healthy habits like exercise, a balanced diet, and adequate sleep. Remind them recovery takes time and they are not alone.
