The holidays are such a magical time, and create beautiful memories for you and your family. But sometimes for parents it can be such a busy time, and you don’t want the stresses of the season to take away from the joy!

Taking the time for self-care can be so important. Happy parents lead to a happy household, so take the time for yourself and take some easy steps to look after yourself during the holidays.

Make a list (and check it twice!)

With all the chaos of the holidays it can be so easy to get overwhelmed. So the best thing to do is to make a list, and try to get ahead.

Nobody wants to be doing the last minute dash to the shops for gifts on Christmas Eve. Or scrambling to meet everyone’s dietary requirements. Having a plan and making a list can be your best friend here.

And remember to delegate! There’s a lot that goes into the holidays, so share the responsibilities. Everyone should have time to enjoy themselves and relax.

Kids love to get involved with the holidays, so ask them to help lighten your load!

Younger children can help with simple tasks like decorating cookies, wrapping presents, or setting the table for holiday meals, while older kids might assist with putting up decorations, writing holiday cards, or tidying shared spaces.

Treat Yourself

Christmas may be all about giving but remember to give back to yourself and your mental health. Schedule activities you genuinely enjoy — whether it’s a holiday movie, a festive craft, or simply a walk.

Make time for a hobby that you find relaxing. Even simply meditating for a few minutes can also do wonders for your stress levels. Remember, self-care is not selfish; it’s essential for recharging during this busy time.

Create a self-care stocking just for you, filled with small but meaningful treats that bring you comfort and joy. Fill it with items that help you unwind and feel pampered.

You might include a small journal for jotting down thoughts, or a candle in a seasonal scent like cinnamon, pine, or vanilla. Personalise your stocking with whatever makes you feel cared for and loved – the excitement of “opening” it and indulging in its treasures when you need a little holiday cheer.

Rest and Recharge

Sleep is the most important thing that you can do to recharge, and make sure you have the energy for everything else that the holidays bring!

Late nights and indulgent meals can play with your energy levels. Which means sleep will quickly become your best friend during the holidays. So don’t forget to rest! Your body and mind will thank you for it, and you’ll be better equipped to handle the demands of the season with patience and positivity.

Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day, especially if holiday beverages like coffee or alcohol are part of your celebrations.

When it comes to sleep, aim to create a relaxing bedtime routine, such as dimming the lights, reducing screen time, or reading a book to unwind.

Consistent sleep patterns help your body recover and maintain energy levels, so try to prioritise going to bed and waking up at similar times, even on holidays. Your body and mind will thank you.

The holiday season is about connection, love, and joy. By prioritising self-care, you’re not only enhancing your own well-being but also setting the stage for a more peaceful and fulfilling holiday experience for your entire family. Remember: a happier, healthier you is the greatest gift you can give to those you love.
